Critical Evaluation Of First Draft

My magazine represents and has a style which could be associated with an alternative rock genre magazine.  This effect has been produced by using bold colours and fonts, an image with a musical touch (she’s holding a guitar), a main headline which stands out compared to the rest and generally following the conventions of a music magazine.

The cover lines are clear and coloured coordinated and are all in the same font. Creating a house style as these fonts and colours would be produced on every issue. The main cover line is done differently to make it stand out, i.e there is no box behind it like the others and it’s the only cover line in purple. The cover lines only obscure the bottom part of the photo but this can be considered a convention as all music magazine do this in some way. The masthead stands out and has a texture to it as I have tried to make it look cracked. The masthead stands out due to it being a black on white. The masthead is clear and easy to read from a distance and up close.

Although on Photoshop the background and the image go together but once it was printed out I saw that the image needs to be lighter as it almost blends in with the background.

I have included a barcode, website, issue number and date and the price. I have made the issue number and price very easy to read, making it clear to anyone who picks it up. Including a website gives the magazine another platform to draw their target audience in.

I feel that my magazine has followed most of the conventions of a magazine but has in my opinion an amateur look to the style/design. But this amateur look could be a way to grab the attention of the younger end of the target audience.
